Last month, Mariposa Trails had the opportunity to deliver our professional development training “Culturally Safe Conversations” to staff at TAFE SA’s Adelaide campus.
This session was designed to support educators and staff working with multicultural, migrant, refugee and international students. In increasingly diverse learning environments, culturally safe communication is not just a skill — it is an essential practice that fosters inclusion, trust and belonging.
Why Culturally Safe Conversations Matter
Students from multicultural backgrounds often navigate complex experiences shaped by migration, identity, language, trauma and adaptation. Creating spaces where they feel heard, respected and understood can significantly impact their wellbeing, engagement and educational outcomes.
Through this training, we explored:
The meaning and principles of cultural safety
The importance of reflective practice and self-awareness
Barriers that can impact communication across cultures
Practical tools to foster respectful, inclusive dialogue
At Mariposa Trails, we believe that culturally safe conversations are foundational to suicide prevention and community wellbeing. When people feel seen and valued, they are more likely to seek support and remain connected.
A Collaborative Effort
We extend our sincere thanks to Sophia Sadi (Yellow Balloon Therapy) and Monica Garcia (Latino Entrepreneurs in Adelaide) for presenting on behalf of Mariposa Trails. Their contributions enriched the learning experience and reflected the strength of community collaboration.
Continuing the Work
Mariposa Trails is a cross-cultural education project and part of the Suicide Prevention Network of SA. Through learning circles, community engagement and accredited training, we continue working towards safer, stronger and more inclusive communities.
We are grateful to TAFE SA for their commitment to supporting diverse students and for recognising the importance of culturally safe practice in education.
Together, we continue building bridges between culture, community and care.
